"Looks like that one's been playin' in the dust!"

Jodi - we're living parallel lives here!!!! For us it was raspberries, not blueberries. I think they must have been doing belly flops into the dusty road and dumping handfuls of dirt into their hair. It was, er, magnificent. And the raspberries were delicious!

Really?

Kerith,
Yeah....so how are you doing with four? I did not think I was going to manage getting berries done. We didn't do raspberries this year, but at least we are getting something done.

Janine...
Yes. Really. And at the same place you went.

Puts a whole new slant on "prejudice" when it's one of our own. My defenses went up instantly on reading this, wanting to protect him from this kind of hurt. My own past careless words came immediately to my mind, the Spirit whispering "Guilty?" And my response, "Yes, Lord, I'm guilty." God, help us.

So, since it was at the same place that I picked at, I must share my story. Racism is alive and well.

I overheard this conversation while I was getting ready to pay for my blueberries.

The man in front of me was asking one of the owners if they ever used picking machines to harvest the berries. She responded that the machines tend to bruise the berries. Then she proceeded to say THIS:

"Actually, we have our own picking machines. They're called Hispanics and they work just great." Smirk.

Ugh. I was sickened.

I read that and could actually hear some people I know and love say it. Oh, they wouldn't say it because they want to hurt anyone, nor would they say they are prejudice but rather just out of ignorance of what is the right thing to say anymore. Although we see it as cruel (and it does bring tears to my eyes) some actually say what "comes to their mind".

I pray God will give all of us as family wisdom in how knowing how to answer and handle inconsiderate comments as well as the dealing with the feelings Noah will have from them.

...working on a post in response to this quote.

My response would have been: No...the others have just been playing in flour.

My response thought:"Yes, and isn't
he beautiful?"

The flour thing cracked me up.

Racism is alive and well, but!

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Praise God.

I subscribe to Sojourners "Verse and Voice" (A daily e-mail with a verse and a quote). I realize that my attitude towards the woman who made the said comment was also wrong. Forgive me.

Anyhow, here is what showed up in my inbox today.

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
- Romans 10:12-13

Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.

Sheri, I know what you mean. Some are ignorant and don't even know what they're saying might hurt. I guess my biggest concern is for the kids. I now have a Hispanic niece, a Chinese cousin and an Ethiopian nephew.

I love it, Janine, a wonderful blend of the world in your family. What a great blessing for your kids.
