Happy Birthday to My Firstborn

When I was One, I had just begun.

When I was Two, I was nearly new.

When I was Three, I was hardly me.

When I was Four, I was not much more.

When I was Five, I was just alive.

But now I am Six, I'm as clever as clever,
So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever.
-A.A. Milne

Our Jake. Six years old. I think you woke up with extra spunk today...some sort of new attitude brewed inside of you; I'm not the only one who saw it.
You have always been your own person. Your own little man, not easily swayed by peer pressure or crafty persuasions to get you to do what you don't want to do. You have always seemed to know when your time to do things is and then you do them well. Keep this. God gives you your desires and your interests. Don't trade them for the interests of others. So far, I have not needed to tell you this.
You have a unique gift for speech. Sayings and words sometimes make their way from your ever moving head, seeming to escape, and you are confused why they are so amusing. I suppose to you they are just normal every-moment thoughts. But to me they are glimpses of gold; of what lies beneath the surface of your clever (often hidden) mind.
Stay six little man. Stay six forever and ever. I love you.

Happy birthday Jake!

If I may summerize your mother's comments on your outstanding & positive attributes, I think what she is trying to say is keep your spunk for life, hold to what you know is right, and maintain good judgemnt of knowing when to wait and when to no wait. And last, season your speech with salt.
But. for crying out loud don't stay six.

There is a longing in all of us adults to have the young boy you are while at the same time longing to see the wonderful man you will sometime become. It is a sweet, sad feeling to watch you grow into that man so quickly. We love you more than we can say.
