A Lesson in Science: Bees

Josh's parents are blessed to live on eight acres of country. Included in this "blessing" has been skunks under the house, chickens on the porch, cowpies in the lawn and now a large swarm of bees in the front oak. I must admit I am not the first one to rush towards a beehive, (as you can tell from the video commentary) but this was pretty amazing.

The swarm came today...very quickly. Josh spotted it at lunch time. A bee collector was summoned and he was very willing to share the complexities of these little critters. These bees were in search of a permanent place to build a hive. They "scout" places and dance to their level of excitement for their spot...drawing more bees. When there are enough bees, a quorum is formed and their hive location is established. That is the stage they were in.

Amazing.

Mr. Bee Man was, as you can tell, open to sharing the design in bees. He uses the attention he draws from his job to point out complexities which point to incredible design.

If you can believe it, there is nothing holding them up but each other. The branch from which they hang is small. That is one dense ball of bees.

The branch after the bees

The bees returning from the field. Mr. Bee Man will be back on Monday to collect the rest. He informed us that he will be dressed in his bee suit this time as the bees are likely to be grumpy.

ok...that was incredible! Especially when he knocked a good portion of them in the bucket. Did you help him out on the question of evolved or designed?

Good Grief!!!! How I would have loved to share that experience with you all. Who is that guy? Bees have always fascinated me. I remember sitting out in my Dad's almond orchard when the trees were in bloom and the hives were brought in for pollination. I would position myself about two feet from the hive and watch them come and go. I recommend it. However, putting them in the trunk of my car...? You need to keep him in mind as a source for a 'school field trip'. Just do it when I can come, too.

OK, too funny. When I went to do the word verification for the previous comment the last three letters were buz!

Yuck, yuck, yuck... how you did not take your children and go running is beyond me! We see one bee and the girls and I are locked in the house for the rest of the day... we have a serious fear! But what a great memory for your boys!

Yes, it was quite amazing!

Beth, I should say that the bee man was a very nice Christian man who uses the attention he draws to explain and show God's design. He was gearing up to explain it to us when we told him we were fellow believers.

Mom, I think I will definitely keep him in mind for a school field trip. I got a really great science book from 1911 which has a lot of hands on/observation things in it. I am sure there is a section on bees.

Coraly, You have girls, I have boys...therein lies the difference. As you can tell from one of the videos, their wimpy mom would have loved to go inside...but it was too cool to watch from the window.

Can we come out Monday when they take the rest? That was so cool. I love how everyone i the background kept laughing. Nervous?

I knew very little about bees until yesterday. There is already quite a swarm out in the tree again - larger than a football. We called the "bee man" and he said he'd come out sometime Mon. Not sure when at this point. Hopefully they won't die or disappear before than... Thanks for the great blog, Jodi. Mom Y.

Coraly, It doesn't HAVE to be a boy/girl difference in the kids. I've found that my girls are fine with bugs, etc. I think they pick up on a lot of fears from the parents. So, if YOU show an interest in bees, even if you are terrified, then they will calm down and think they are cool. A lot of parenting is acting.

Yea! My girls like bugs!

its not a fear of bugs... but more a fear of an allergic reaction... Layne and Maisen love to go on worm hunts... I

That was absolutely awesome. I can't get over the swarm dropping into the crate. Wow!
